Mount Lavinia Beach
Getting there: public transport or rail, and will take only about 30 minutes from Colombo, along the Galle road or the coastal railway line. From the international airport it’s about 02 hours away and best is to use a BIAT’s taxi.
Where to stay: Being a premier location in Close proximity to Colombo, you could stay in a city hotel and use the train, public bus or a tri-shaw. Several star class hotels are available along with many bed & breakfast or room only homesteads or apartments for long term rent, however due to demand and close proximity to Colombo Mt.Lavinia is rated as an expensive destination.
Things to do: A wide clean beach to swim from November to end March as the seas are clam but the ever present danger of rip-tides. Kite surfing, kayaking are also available and one mile of golden sandy beaches strewn with expensive seafood restaurants serving the best cuisine in town, and organises events on St. Valentine’s day, Christmas and 31st Night parties. The highlight is the colonial era governor’s mansion turned star class hotel located on a rocky headland. National Kite festival is held in Mt.Lavinia each year in November, when thousand flock to this beach to witness the competition.
Make a note of: None of the Sri Lankan beaches have a permanent life guard stations or guards, exercise caution as the response times of a recue party are long. Heed warnings of the locals and never venture to sea alone, while being closer to shore can eliminate most of your concerns. Sun can be harsh, use wide brimmed hats and sun screen liberally. Restaurants are expensive but serve value for money you might feel under dressed in some of them.
